In America, the number of segregated schools (where less than 40% of students are white) has doubled since 1996 and currently 71% of African American students attend one of these schools. This is the result of regulations which require families within certain catchment zones to attend certain schools, mirroring racially-stratified districts. The schools are characterised by a much lower average family income than other schools and generally poorer educational resources.
